Excavation & Site Work

Experienced Groundwork for Projects That Need to Move Forward

Hummingbird Building & Excavation provides excavation and site work for residential, commercial, and public projects throughout the Puget Sound region.

From grading and utility trenching to drainage, site preparation, and foundation excavation, we bring hands-on field experience, capable equipment, and practical problem-solving to every project.

Excavation Services

Start With the GroundWork

Good site work is about more than moving dirt. Ground conditions, drainage, access, utilities, grades, and what comes next all affect how the work should be approached.

Hummingbird provides excavation and earthwork for standalone projects as well as work associated with construction, stormwater, drainage, utilities, and outdoor improvements.

Services may include:

  • Site clearing and preparation

  • Grading and reshaping

  • Utility trenching

  • Storm and sanitary utility excavation

  • Drainage excavation and improvements

  • Footing and foundation preparation

  • Driveway and access preparation

  • Material excavation and removal

  • Backfill and site restoration

  • Small demolition and site cleanup

  • Other excavation and earthwork

The work that happens before construction begins can have a lasting effect on everything that follows.

Hummingbird provides clearing, excavation, grading, and site preparation to create workable conditions for construction and property improvements. Depending on the project, that may include removing unsuitable material, establishing grades, preparing access, excavating for foundations or footings, and restoring disturbed areas when the work is complete.

We approach grading and excavation with the finished project in mind, not simply the amount of material that needs to be moved.

Utilities & Drainage

Make Room for What Happens Below the Surface

Utility and drainage work requires careful excavation, coordination, and an understanding of how the surrounding site will function once the trench is closed.

Hummingbird’s experience includes excavation associated with:

  • Stormwater infrastructure

  • Storm and sanitary sewer connections

  • Drainage systems

  • Utility trenching

  • Site and yard drainage corrections

  • Backfill and restoration

Our background in both excavation and stormwater is especially useful when drainage and earthwork overlap.

When the Project Gets Complicated

Practical Problem Solving in the Field

Excavation projects do not always unfold exactly as planned.

Schedules change. Access can be difficult. Existing site conditions may create new challenges. Materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other parts of the project often need to be coordinated quickly.

Hummingbird is owner-operated and hands-on, which allows us to respond directly to changing conditions and make practical decisions in the field.

Whether we’re stepping into an active construction project, working around limited access, or coordinating multiple pieces of site work, the goal is the same: understand what the project needs and keep the work moving.

Featured Project

A.C. Davis High School Auditorium Upgrade

When another contractor left the project unfinished, Hummingbird was brought in on short notice to help keep a time-sensitive auditorium renovation moving.

The work included excavation for new lobby footings, storm and sanitary sewer connections, significant material hauling, and construction of a new concrete patio and public area.

Completing the work required quickly establishing local material and hauling resources, coordinating with the project team, and mobilizing from Western Washington to Yakima to meet the construction schedule.

Equipment & Capability

The Right Equipment for the Work

Different sites call for different approaches.

Hummingbird uses excavation, hauling, and site work equipment suited to the conditions and scale of the project. Our hands-on equipment experience allows us to work across a range of environments, from residential properties and difficult-access sites to commercial and public construction projects.

Just as important as having the equipment is knowing how to use it efficiently around existing infrastructure, changing site conditions, and the other work happening on the project.

Excavation That Connects With the Rest of the Site

More Than a Standalone Service

Excavation often connects directly to other work.

A stormwater restoration may require sediment removal and regrading. A drainage correction may require trenching and site restoration. A deck or outdoor improvement may need excavation, grading, or footing preparation before construction can begin.

Because Hummingbird works across excavation, stormwater, drainage, and outdoor construction, we can consider those connections as part of the project rather than treating every task in isolation.

Why Hummingbird?

Experienced in the Seat and on the Site

Owner-operator Matt Brown brings decades of experience in excavation, heavy equipment operation, construction, stormwater, and municipal Public Works.

That experience provides a practical understanding of how excavation fits into the larger project - from access and sequencing to drainage, utilities, grading, and restoration.

Matt is directly involved in evaluating, planning, and performing the work, giving clients a direct line to the person operating the equipment and making decisions in the field.

Planning an Excavation Project?

Tell us what you’re working on.

Whether you need grading, trenching, site preparation, utility excavation, drainage work, or another type of earthwork, send us a few project details along with any photos, plans, or other information you already have.

We’ll review the information and let you know whether Hummingbird is a good fit for the project.

Not sure exactly what work is needed? Start with what you’re trying to accomplish or what you’re seeing on the site, and we’ll go from there.
