Stormwater & Drainage

Experience That Goes Beyond Routine Maintenance

Stormwater facilities need ongoing care to remain accessible, maintainable, and functional.

Hummingbird Building & Excavation provides stormwater facility maintenance, restoration, drainage work, and related excavation throughout the Puget Sound region.

With nearly 30 years of hands-on experience, municipal Public Works experience, and professional excavation capability, we can help with everything from routine vegetation management to larger facility restoration projects.

Stormwater Services

Maintenance, Restoration & Corrective Work

Every stormwater facility is different. The work needed depends on the type of facility, site conditions, access, vegetation, sediment accumulation, drainage, and any maintenance items identified through inspection.

Hummingbird provides hands-on field services that may include:

  • Stormwater pond and bioswale maintenance

  • Vegetation and invasive species management

  • Mowing, brush cutting, and access clearing

  • Sediment and accumulated material removal

  • Inlet and outlet clearing

  • Facility regrading and site restoration

  • Biofiltration media removal and replacement

  • Drainage improvements and corrections

  • Stormwater-related excavation

  • Routine and recurring facility maintenance

Have an Inspection Report?

Start With What You Already Know

If an inspection has identified maintenance items at your stormwater facility, send the report with your project request.

We’ll use the available information to better understand the facility, site conditions, and identified maintenance needs. From there, we can determine whether the work is a good fit for Hummingbird and whether additional site evaluation is needed.

Photos, site maps, maintenance records, and plans are also helpful when available.

Routine Maintenance

Stay Ahead of Larger Problems

Stormwater maintenance is easier to manage when facilities remain accessible, and maintenance needs are addressed before they grow.

Routine work may include mowing and vegetation control, removing invasive species, clearing access to structures, removing debris, maintaining inlet and outlet areas, and addressing other visible maintenance needs.

Regular attention can also make facilities easier to inspect and help identify conditions that may require more substantial corrective work.

For properties that need recurring service, Hummingbird can discuss a maintenance approach based on the facility and site conditions.

Facility Restoration

When Routine Maintenance Is No Longer Enough

Over time, sediment accumulation, invasive vegetation, erosion, drainage problems, or deferred maintenance can turn a manageable facility into a larger project.

Hummingbird combines stormwater expertise with excavation and heavy-equipment capability to take on more substantial corrective work.

Depending on the facility and project, restoration may involve sediment removal, vegetation clearing, excavation, regrading, media replacement, hauling, drainage work, revegetation, and restoration of disturbed areas.

That combination lets us stay on a project when the solution requires more than mowing or surface-level maintenance.

Excavation & Drainage

When the Problem Is Below the Surface

Some stormwater and drainage problems require excavation, grading, or infrastructure work.

Hummingbird’s excavation capability allows us to take on projects involving drainage corrections, stormwater infrastructure, regrading, material removal, utility-related excavation, and restoration work associated with stormwater facilities.

Having both stormwater and excavation experience means we can evaluate the work as a connected site problem rather than treating excavation as a separate service.

Equipment For Challenging Facilities

The Right Approach for the Site

Stormwater facilities are not always easy places to work.

Steep slopes, dense vegetation, soft ground, limited access, and large facility footprints can make maintenance difficult with conventional equipment.

Hummingbird uses a range of equipment based on site conditions, including excavators, dump trucks, vegetation-management equipment, and tracked remote slope-mowing equipment for areas where traditional mowing equipment may not be practical.

The goal isn’t simply to bring more equipment to the job. It’s to use the right equipment and approach for the facility's conditions.

Featured Project

Sound Transit Stormwater Facility Restoration

Hummingbird restored multiple stormwater facilities that had become overgrown and required more substantial corrective maintenance.

The work included vegetation and invasive-species removal, sediment and accumulated-material removal, access and facility restoration, and related site work to return the facilities to a more maintainable condition.

Why Experience Matters

Nearly 30 Years Working With Stormwater

Owner-operator Matt Brown brings nearly 30 years of experience in stormwater maintenance, excavation, heavy equipment operation, construction, and municipal Public Works.

That background provides a practical understanding of both the facility and the work required to maintain or restore it.

When evaluating a project, Hummingbird considers the condition of the facility, access, drainage, constructability, equipment needs, and how the site will be maintained after the immediate work is complete.

It’s a hands-on approach built from years of working with stormwater infrastructure in the field.

Need Help With a Stormwater Facility?

Whether you’re responding to an inspection report, planning routine maintenance, dealing with an overgrown facility, or facing a larger restoration project, tell us what you’re working with.

Send us your inspection report, photos, plans, or a description of the conditions you’re seeing. We’ll review the information and let you know whether Hummingbird is a good fit for the work.

Not sure what the facility needs? That’s okay. Start with what you know, and we’ll go from there.
